When Moore first approached the matriarch of this upper-class home, she wouldn’t let him photograph the majestic entrance hall and main sitting room — even after hours of conversation in Spanish and English. Two years later when he returned, she recognized him immediately and agreed to the pictures.
“In Cuba, they have to get to know you,” Moore says. “In her case, the fact that I came back meant that I was legitimate somehow.”
